In a futuristic world, North America will have been destroyed by numerous natural disasters into a varying world called Panem. Not cities, but districts will have sprouted up, each with their own specialty depending on location. Everything has changed now, and barely anything can be predicted.

Only one thing is for certain every year: the Hunger Games. A competition between 24 twelve to eighteen-year-olds, the Hunger Games calls for the contestants, called “Tributes,” to fight to the death in a grueling, torturous contest that is called “entertainment“ for the members of the Capitol.

On the 74th event, against all odds, the impoverished 12-year-old Primrose Everdeen is called to represent the girls in the poorest district, District 12. And bravely, her sister, Katniss, steps up and takes her place. Also chosen is Peeta Mellark, a baker’s boy whom Katniss grew up with.

The story goes on with the competition, with the setting a forest and the fellow tributes the conflict. Katniss finds herself torn several ways apart by thoughts of betrayal, reminiscence, and love. After several weeks, everything will come down to the final moment, when the winner is declared.

The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins, is an incredible book filled with a perfect blend of action and romance, displaying a realistic war-torn world for the reader. One will gasp and cry with the characters, with shocking event after shocking event, until the very end of the book, when the cliffhanger leaves one needing more.
